Abelia is a genus of about 15 species of deciduous or evergreen shrubs in the honeysuckle family. They are grown for their attractive, glossy foliage and clusters of small, bell-shaped flowers that bloom in the summer and fall. They are often used as hedges or as specimen plants in gardens and can be trained to grow as a small tree. They are tolerant of a wide range of soil types and prefer full sun to partial shade. They are relatively low maintenance and are often drought tolerant once established. The most common species is Abelia x grandiflora, which is a hybrid of two Asian species and typically grows 3-6 feet tall
