About Staghorn Sumac

Rhus typhina, or staghorn sumac, is a vigorous, suckering deciduous shrub or small tree reaching up to 25 feet. It is distinguished by its unique velvety, reddish-brown branchlets that resemble deer antlers. The large, pinnately compound leaves provide a lush green canopy in summer before turning spectacular shades of orange and scarlet in autumn. Ideal for erosion control on slopes or naturalized areas, it thrives in well-drained soils and tolerates urban conditions and drought.
