About Wintergold White Fir

Wintergold is a white-fir selection introduced by Günther Horstmann of Schneverdingen, Germany, in 1959. Its evergreen needles move from chartreuse new growth to summer green and bright butter-yellow in winter, adding a clear seasonal accent among darker conifers. ## Landscape use Use it as a focal conifer, especially where winter foliage color will be visible against a wall, evergreen hedge, or shaded background. The American Conifer Society reports about **1 m tall by 0.7 m wide after 10 years**. For long-term planning, the Royal Horticultural Society lists a wider mature range of **4–8 m tall by 2.5–4 m wide**, reached over roughly 20–50 years; these values are not contradictory because they refer to different ages and sources. ## Growing conditions Plant in full sun and moist but well-drained soil. The RHS lists clay, loam, and sand and an acidic-to-neutral pH range, and recommends shelter from cold winds. The selection grows slowly; the American Conifer Society reports about 10–15 cm of annual growth in many locations. Do not equate its golden winter foliage with drought or salt tolerance: reliable cultivar-specific evidence for those stresses was not identified. ## Selection background The American Conifer Society records Horstmann’s 1959 introduction from a batch of white-fir seedlings. The current [Pflanzen-Zentrum Horstmann](https://www.pflanzenzentrum-horstmann.de/ueber-uns) says it grows dwarf conifers in Schneverdingen; I found no current listing confirming that it sells this selection. The sources reviewed did not identify a plant-patent record, so patent status remains unverified. ## Sources - Cultivar color, growth, size at 10 years, and introduction: [American Conifer Society](https://conifersociety.org/conifers/abies-concolor-wintergold). - Cultivation and long-term size range: [Royal Horticultural Society](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/130416/abies-concolor-wintergold/details). - Additional cultivar description: [Trees and Shrubs Online](https://www.treesandshrubsonline.org/articles/abies/abies-concolor/). ## Maintenance The RHS says routine pruning is not required. Keep roots evenly moist while the tree establishes, maintain drainage, and protect it from severe exposure. Preserve the natural outline unless a specific design calls for light shaping.
