Create design onlineAbout Baby Buttons Vine Maple Tree
Baby Buttons (*Acer circinatum* ‘Baby Buttons’) is a dwarf vine-maple selection introduced by Buchholz Nursery from a witches’ broom found on the species. Its compact rounded habit and small green leaves bring the character of a Pacific Northwest maple to small gardens and containers, with yellow-orange fall color and an eventual size of roughly 2–3 feet.
## Size and garden use
This selection keeps the layered look of vine maple in a much smaller plant. The leaves are noticeably smaller than those of the species, while the dense, rounded outline makes the shrub easy to use as a focal plant in a rock garden, woodland edge, or patio container. It can also work in a collector’s garden where compact maples are displayed individually. Sources vary on mature size: [Trees and Shrubs Online](https://www.treesandshrubsonline.org/articles/acer/acer-circinatum/) reports little over ½ metre tall and wide at ten years, while the [introducing nursery](https://buchholznursery.com/products/acer-circinatum-baby-buttons-dwarf-japanese-maple) gives about 3 feet in both dimensions. Expect a slow-growing plant in the **2–3 foot** range rather than a fast-filling shrub. Small greenish-white flowers are possible in spring, following the species; foliage and compact form are the main ornamental features.
## Growing conditions
A conservative catalog range is **USDA zones 5–8**: Trees and Shrubs Online lists zone 5, while Buchholz Nursery lists zones 6–8. Give it morning sun or bright partial shade, with protection from hot afternoon sun in warmer climates. Use moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter and water regularly while it establishes. The dwarf form is not evidence of drought tolerance; maintain soil moisture during dry weather. NC State Extension’s [vine maple profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/acer-circinatum/) provides the species-level guidance on shade, moisture, and pruning.
## Breeder and plant rights
Talon Buchholz introduced ‘Baby Buttons’ through [Buchholz Nursery](https://buchholznursery.com/products/acer-circinatum-baby-buttons-dwarf-japanese-maple). The nursery and horticultural references describe it as a witches’ broom selection but do not identify a patent number. I could not verify a plant-patent record for this cultivar in the sources reviewed.
## Maintenance
**Low maintenance** once established. Keep the root zone evenly moist through dry periods and allow the plant to hold its natural mound. Remove dead or misplaced stems as needed; repeated shearing would reduce its natural shape. Because it grows slowly, avoid pruning to force a smaller outline and give it room to reach its expected width.
