Red Dragon Japanese Maple Tree

Acer palmatum dissectum ‘Red Dragon’ is a compact, weeping Japanese maple with finely divided foliage that stays deep maroon to burgundy through summer and turns red in fall. Its cascading outline and leaf color make a focal point in a small garden or large patio container. ## Cultivar and size The American Japanese Maple Society associates its 1991 introduction with Graham Roberts of Duncan & Davies Nursery in New Zealand. Final dimensions depend on age, training, and growing conditions. ## Siting and soil Use moist, well-drained soil in a sheltered position. Campbell’s advises protection from hot winds and some afternoon shade; Mr Maple reports performance in sun or shade. In hot climates, afternoon protection is prudent for the finely cut leaves. ## Maintenance Water consistently while establishing and through extended dry weather. Keep the root zone from drying sharply but avoid poorly drained ground. Allow branches to cascade naturally and remove damaged growth as needed.
