About Waterfall Japanese Maple Tree

Acer palmatum dissectum ‘Waterfall’ is a green laceleaf Japanese maple with cascading branches and finely divided foliage. Its leaves remain green through spring and summer, then develop gold, orange, and red fall shades; the layered form remains visible after leaf drop. ## Cultivar and landscape use ‘Waterfall’ is similar to ‘Viridis’ but has somewhat larger, longer leaves and a more flowing appearance. Use it as a specimen in a rock garden or courtyard, or in a large container. Training a young leader upward can produce a taller canopy. See [Spirit Hill Maples](https://www.spirithillmaplenursery.com/our-collection-of-maple-trees-1/acer-palmatum-var.-dissectum-'waterfall'). ## Size and siting Spirit Hill reports 8–10 ft tall and 10–12 ft wide when the main stem is staked; [Horsford’s Nursery](https://horsfordnursery.com/acer-palmatum-dissectum-waterfall/) lists 6–8 ft tall and 8–10 ft wide. Plant in moist, well-drained soil in a sheltered position with sun or partial shade. Avoid exposed, poorly drained sites. The [Missouri Botanical Garden profile](https://plantfinder.mobot.org/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?hf=1&isprofile=0&taxonid=263157) also describes the cultivar’s cascading form. ## Maintenance Keep soil moist but not waterlogged, particularly during establishment and summer dry periods. Mulch to conserve moisture, keeping it away from the trunk. Prune sparingly and remove damaged growth as needed.
