About Pixie Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Pixie’ is a dense, semi-dwarf Japanese maple with red-purple foliage and a compact, twiggy canopy. Spring leaves begin bright red, deepen toward burgundy in summer, and provide red fall color, making it useful as a focal point in a smaller garden or patio. ## Foliage and form Oregon State University describes ‘Pixie’ as denser than ‘Bloodgood’ and notes that its dark red-purple leaves can hold color into midsummer. The cultivar was released by Buchholz & Buchholz Nursery in Oregon. Evergreen Nursery lists 8–10 ft tall and 6–8 ft wide at ten years; Oregon State cautions that the tree may eventually exceed 10 ft. See the [Oregon State profile](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/acer-palmatum-pixie) and [Evergreen Nursery listing](https://www.theevergreennursery.com/acer-palmatum-pixie.html). ## Siting and soil Use it as a specimen, in a small garden, or in a roomy container with drainage. Full sun to partial shade is suitable, though protection from intense afternoon exposure helps limit leaf damage. Grow in moist, organically rich, well-drained soil; consistent moisture supports the foliage. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and dry spells, taking care not to leave roots waterlogged. Remove damaged or crossing branches selectively and allow the dense natural canopy to develop. Treat ten-year dimensions as planning guidance rather than a guaranteed maximum.
