Acer palmatum ‘Red Select’ is a deciduous Japanese maple with weeping growth and deeply divided, lace-like foliage. Red new growth darkens to maroon or purple in summer and turns reddish-orange in fall, bringing color and a cascading outline to a specimen planting.
## Form and landscape use
This cultivar is sold as a red laceleaf or cutleaf Japanese maple. Urban Tree Farm lists a mature size of 6–10 ft tall and 8–15 ft wide; Kigi Nursery reports an 8 ft by 6 ft ten-year average, illustrating that size varies with age and conditions. Use it where spreading branches can cascade, such as a lawn edge, courtyard, or sheltered bed. See the [Urban Tree Farm listing](https://www.urbantreefarm.com/product/acer-palmatum-red-select/) and [Kigi Nursery listing](https://kiginursery.com/maples/acer-palmatum-dissectum-red-select-cutleaf-japanese-maple/).
## Siting and soil
Partial shade is a reasonable starting point. Urban Tree Farm recommends morning sun with afternoon shade or shade, while Kigi lists full sun; adjust exposure for local heat and leaf response. Use well-drained soil and provide regular moisture, especially while establishing. Sources differ on drought tolerance, so avoid assuming this cultivar suits dry conditions.
## Maintenance
Water consistently during establishment and dry periods. Avoid waterlogged soil. Prune selectively to remove damaged or crossing branches while preserving the weeping framework, and allow room for the mature spread.
