Create design onlineAbout Lion's Head Japanese Maple
Lion’s Head Japanese Maple is the common name for Acer palmatum ‘Shishigashira’, an upright, compact cultivar with dense tufts of curled leaves along its stems. Its green summer canopy turns gold and crimson in autumn, giving the tree distinctive texture and a strong seasonal display.
## Landscape use and seasonal interest
Use it as a specimen, woodland garden accent, or patio container where its unusual foliage can be viewed closely. Missouri Botanical Garden describes a compact, slow-growing habit and typically 7–15 ft height; Morton Arboretum lists about 15 ft tall by 10 ft wide. Dimensions vary with growing conditions. ‘Shishigashira’ means lion’s head and is also known as ‘Ribesifolium’. See the [Missouri Botanical Garden profile](https://plantfinder.mobot.org/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?+cv=2+&taxonid=241560) and [Morton Arboretum](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/japanese-maple/).
## Siting and soil
Plant in full sun to partial shade; in hot climates, afternoon shade helps reduce scorch. Provide moist, organically rich, well-drained soil. New growth can be vulnerable to late spring frost, and dry soil can lead to leaf scorch.
## Maintenance
Water during dry periods, especially while establishing. Prune selectively to maintain the framework and avoid routine shaping that removes characteristic clustered growth.
