‘Columnare’ is a narrow, upright cultivar of Norway maple with dark green foliage and yellow autumn color. Its crown is columnar rather than truly slender at maturity, and published sources report a wide range of ultimate size.
## Landscape use and seasonal interest
The upright crown can suit a street, screen, or large landscape where vertical form is useful and root space is adequate. [Oregon State University](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/acer-platanoides) lists about 35 ft tall by 15 ft wide. [UF/IFAS Extension](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/ST031) reports 50–60 ft tall and 15–20 ft wide, while the [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/251/acer-platanoides-columnare/details) gives up to 20 m tall and 8 m wide. Allow room for the larger reported dimensions. Greenish-yellow flowers appear before the leaves; foliage turns yellow in autumn.
## Siting and growing conditions
Grow in full sun or partial shade. UF/IFAS reports tolerance of varied soils, including alkaline soils, and coastal conditions. Shallow roots can compete with lawn and affect nearby paving, so keep the rooting area clear of sidewalks and turf where practical. Norway maple may naturalize outside cultivation in some regions; check local guidance before planting.
## Maintenance
Water during establishment and extended dry periods. Inspect the crown for weak structure and remove damaged or crossing branches selectively. Avoid shearing that would distort its upright form.
