Sycamore Maple Tree

Sycamore maple (*Acer pseudoplatanus*), also called planetree maple and great maple, is a large, fast-growing deciduous tree with an upright, spreading crown. Its dark-green, five-lobed leaves provide dense shade; yellow-green spring flowers hang in panicles and are followed by winged seeds. Autumn color is usually muted yellow rather than showy ([RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/269/acer-pseudoplatanus/details); [University of Florida IFAS](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/ST040)). ## Landscape use and mature size UF/IFAS describes a common height of 40–60 feet, with larger trees capable of exceeding 100 feet, and lists a 40–60 foot spread. Kwantlen Polytechnic University gives a mature range of 15–22 m tall by 15–25 m wide ([KPU School of Horticulture](https://plantdatabase.kpu.ca/PlantPrint/acps)). Use it as a substantial shade tree in parks, boulevards, and other open sites; it is too large for a small garden. ## Siting and seasonal interest Plant in full sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. The RHS also lists chalk, clay, loam, and sand as suitable. UF/IFAS gives USDA zones 5A–7B and identifies the species as a non-native invasive in North America; local planting guidance matters. ## Maintenance Water while establishing and during prolonged dry periods. Allow the crown to spread and plan for large leaves and winged seeds beneath the tree. UF/IFAS reports that little pruning is needed to develop a sound trunk and branch structure; remove damaged branches when necessary.
