About North Wind Maple

North Wind® is Iseli Nursery’s hardy maple introduction in the Jack Frost® collection. The breeder identifies the selection as Acer × pseudosieboldianum ‘IslNW’; its red spring leaves turn green by midsummer, with pink samaras and orange-scarlet fall color. ## Landscape use and size Iseli lists a broad-upright tree about 20 ft tall and 15 ft wide. A Quebec nursery gives a broader mature range of 16–20 ft tall by 13–16 ft wide. The broad upright crown can fit residential gardens that need a cold-hardy ornamental tree but still have space for an eventual 15–20 ft height. ## Seasonal foliage Red leaves emerge in spring and mature to green by midsummer. The pink samaras stand out against summer foliage; these are winged fruits, not flowers. In northern landscapes, orange and scarlet fall color can continue after other trees have changed. ## Siting and soil The breeder rates it hardy to USDA zone 4 and suitable for sun to partial shade. The Quebec nursery recommends cool, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil and moderate watering. Its [Iseli Nursery profile](https://iselinursery.com/garden-maples/jack-frost-collection/acer-x-pseudosieboldianum-north-wind-islnw/) provides the selection code, growth rate, form, colors, and size; [Pépinière.ca](https://www.pepiniere.ca/en/products/acer-pseudosieboldianum-north-wind) independently lists the hybrid and growing conditions. ## Maintenance Keep the root zone from drying while the tree establishes and check soil moisture during prolonged dry spells. Use selective pruning only where needed to preserve structure and clearance.
