‘Hasselkus’ is a hybrid of Korean and Japanese maples developed by Dr. Ed Hasselkus in Madison, Wisconsin, and sold as Northern Glow®. It begins with an upright form and matures into a broad crown with green summer foliage and vivid fall color.
## Landscape use and size
J. Frank Schmidt lists a mature size of about 20 ft tall by 24 ft wide; a current nursery profile gives a broader range of 15–20 ft tall by 20–25 ft wide. Use it as a specimen or shade tree where the mature crown has room to spread. The breeder rates the selection for USDA zone 4, and current nursery listings extend the range to zone 8.
## Seasonal interest
Leaves are green through summer and turn bright orange-red to deep red in fall. A Chicago Botanic Garden record reports red flowers in March and April; that record is archived, so bloom dates may vary by climate. A current retailer also lists spring bloom.
## Siting and soil
Plant in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. The [J. Frank Schmidt profile](https://jfschmidt.com/all-trees/introductions/northern-glow-maple/) identifies the cultivar, origin, size, form, and fall color. [Sooner Plant Farm](https://www.soonerplantfarm.com/plant/maple-northern-glow) and [Gertens Wholesale](https://www.gertenswholesale.com/products/acr-x-ps-nrthrn-glw--7-clp-cl26-22475.html) provide current growing and hardiness details; the [Chicago Botanic Garden archive](https://www.chicagobotanic.org/plant-information/plant-finder/acer-pseudosieboldianum-x-palmatum-hasselkus-maple) documents the older bloom and flower-color record.
## Maintenance
Keep soil moist while the tree establishes and during prolonged dry weather. Choose a site protected from drying wind and intense reflected heat, and prune selectively only as needed to maintain structure and clearance.
