Create design onlineAbout Autumn Radiance™ Red Maple
‘Autumn Radiance’ is a deciduous red maple selected for an open, rounded crown and orange-red to red fall color that develops earlier than many red maples. It suits an open lawn, park, or campus planting where a broad shade canopy can mature. [Oregon State University](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/acer-rubrum) lists the cultivar at up to about 40 feet, while [Garden Gate Nursery](https://www.gardengatetrees.com/catalog/acer-rubrum-autumn-radiance-autumn-radiance-maple-tree) lists it at 50 feet tall by 40 feet wide.
## Landscape use and seasonal interest
Green summer leaves color orange-red to red in fall. Oregon State notes that the cultivar colors as much as two weeks before ‘Red Sunset’. As a red maple, it also produces small red flowers before leaf emergence in late winter or early spring; flowering timing varies by climate.
## Size and siting
Allow roughly 40–50 feet of height and about 40 feet of spread, recognizing that tree size varies with site and cultivation. Use full sun or partial shade. Species-level guidance from [North Carolina State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/acer-rubrum/common-name/carolina-maple/) favors moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil; this cultivar is described as intolerant of alkaline soil.
## Maintenance
Keep soil moisture even while a young tree establishes and during prolonged dry weather. Red maple can develop surface roots, so provide room for the root area as the tree matures.
