Create design onlineAbout Norwegian Sunset® Maple
Norwegian Sunset® is J. Frank Schmidt’s Keithsform selection in the Sunset maple group. This upright oval tree carries glossy dark-green leaves through summer, then shifts to yellow-orange and red in fall; the breeder lists about 35 feet tall by 25 feet wide and USDA Zone 4b. [JFS’s cultivar profile](https://jfschmidt.com/all-trees/introductions/norwegian-sunset-maple/) and [comparison of the Shantung-maple hybrids](https://jfschmidt.com/articles/spotlight-shines-on-versatile-shantung-maples/) describe its uniform canopy and branch structure.
## Landscape use and seasonal interest
Its medium-size oval crown can provide shade in a residential or streetscape planting where a 35-by-25-foot tree fits. JFS notes the cultivar’s glossy foliage and heat resistance from its *Acer truncatum* parentage, along with reliable yellow-orange to red autumn color. JFS markets Norwegian Sunset as an *A. truncatum* × *A. platanoides* hybrid; the patent names the cultivar ‘Keithsform’ within *A. truncatum* and says *A. platanoides* is a suspected pollen parent.
## Size and siting
Choose full sun with well-drained soil. [Utah State University](https://extension.usu.edu/yardandgarden/research/maples-in-the-landscape) identifies this hybrid as well adapted to Intermountain West soils. Plan for about 35 feet of height and 25 feet of spread. JFS rates it for USDA Zone 4b, and its upright oval form makes it useful where a medium shade canopy is preferred over a broad-spreading tree. The patent describes Keithsform as a rapid grower with symmetrical branches; mature size still depends on site and growing conditions.
## Maintenance
JFS describes a uniform canopy and strong branch structure. Follow [general tree establishment guidance](https://yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu/how-to/care-newly-planted-trees): water the rootball thoroughly at planting, check its moisture during establishment, and water as it starts to dry. Keep mulch away from the trunk. Allow room for the full spread and prune selectively to remove damaged or crossing branches.
