About Sienna Glen® Freeman Maple

Sienna Glen® Freeman maple is the nursery name for 'Sienna', a deciduous cultivar with an upright, pyramidal crown. Its [historical patent USPP11322P](https://patents.google.com/patent/USPP11322P/en), granted April 4, 2000, describes its distinctive form and deep burgundy autumn color. ## Landscape use and seasonal interest [Johnson's Nursery](https://kb.jniplants.com/sienna-glen-maple-acer-x-freemanii) lists a mature size of 40–50 feet tall and 35–40 feet wide. Dense branching creates shade for a spacious lawn, street planting, or specimen position. Green leaves change through yellow-orange to burgundy-red in fall. Small red flowers appear in April; seed production is usually sparse. ## Siting Choose full sun and allow room for the mature crown. Johnson's Nursery reports tolerance of alkaline soils and stronger branching that is less prone to wind damage than some other Freeman maples. These traits can be useful on exposed sites, although suitable rooting space remains essential. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and maintain a mulch ring that helps protect the trunk from mowing damage. Johnson's Nursery recommends an arborist inspection every five to nine years, adjusted to growth and condition. Remove suckers if they develop at old pruning wounds or trunk injuries, taking care to avoid further bark damage.
