Summerwine yarrow carries flat flower heads of white-eyed crimson flowers that gradually soften to buff pink above divided dark-green leaves. Its upright form and changing flower color suit sunny borders and informal cutting gardens.
## Garden use
The [RHS cultivar profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/86028/achillea-summerwine/details) recommends flower borders, prairie and gravel gardens, wildlife gardens, and cut flowers. It gives a mature height of roughly 1½–3 feet and a spread up to about 20 inches; the [RHS plant shop](https://rhs.crocdn.co.uk/plants/_/achillea-summerwine/classid.2427/) gives about 24 inches in both directions. Allow space for the clump to develop, with final size depending on conditions. The plant shop describes a long summer flower display that attracts beneficial insects, including bees.
## Growing conditions
Plant in full sun and freely draining soil. Moist but well-drained ground is suitable, but heavy soil that stays wet through winter can cause problems. Summerwine tolerates drought once established; water new plants during dry spells while their roots develop.
## Maintenance
Cut back untidy foliage in spring. Large clumps can be lifted and divided in early spring to renew crowded plantings. In exposed sites, support flowering stems before they lean. Leave sound seed heads through winter for visual interest and birds, then clear old stems before new growth develops. These practices follow the RHS profile and plant-shop guidance.
