About Arendsii™ Monkshood

Arendsii monkshood is a tall, clump-forming perennial with dark, divided foliage and branched spikes of hooded lavender-blue flowers in early to mid-autumn. It brings a late-season vertical accent to borders, and all parts are highly toxic if eaten. ## Landscape Use Place it toward the back of a cottage or woodland border in full sun or partial shade, in deep, cool soil that stays moist while draining well. The Royal Horticultural Society accepts the name Aconitum carmichaelii (Arendsii Group) 'Arendsii'; Cambridge University Botanic Garden describes stems around 1–1.5 metres high and notes bumblebees visiting the flowers. The [RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/99571/aconitum-carmichaelii-arendsii-group-arendsii/details) provides cultivar-specific growing guidance and warns against skin contact; [Cambridge Botanic Garden](https://www.botanic.cam.ac.uk/the-garden/plant-list/aconitum-carmichaelii-var-arendsii/) records its autumn flowers and toxicity. ## Seasonal Interest Rich blue to lavender-blue flowers open in early to mid-autumn. Dark green foliage supplies structure through the growing season before dying back. ## Maintenance Keep the soil cool and evenly moist, with drainage to prevent waterlogging. Staking may be needed for tall stems. Cut back dead stems after flowering. Wear protective gloves and avoid skin contact when handling; every part of the plant is highly toxic if eaten.
