About Royal Flush™ Monkshood

‘Royal Flush’ is a compact selection of Carmichael’s monkshood with glossy, divided leaves that emerge bronze-red and mature to deep green. Its upright spikes carry dark-blue hooded flowers in late summer and autumn. The cultivar is associated with U.S. plant patent PP16,102, granted November 8, 2005. ## Landscape Use and Seasonal Interest Plant it in a cool perennial border where its late flowers can rise above neighboring foliage. Published mature-size estimates differ: the RHS lists up to 60 cm tall and 10–50 cm wide, while Ball lists 40–48 inches tall and 28–32 inches wide. The blue flower spikes and spring foliage color are the defining ornamental features. The patent names Bob Brown as inventor; the RHS profile also lists ‘Redleaf’ as a synonym for ‘Royal Flush’. ## Siting Choose full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil; afternoon shade can help in warmer gardens. Give the clump room for its upright stems, and avoid letting the soil dry for long periods. Wear gloves when handling it and keep it away from ingestion: the RHS warns that the plant is toxic if eaten and advises avoiding skin contact.
