About Fuzzy Kiwi

‘Hayward’ is the familiar female fuzzy-kiwi cultivar, grown for its large green fruit and vigorous twining stems. It needs a sturdy framework and a compatible male flowering nearby for a reliable crop; without that pollination, the vine may grow well but produce little fruit. ## Landscape Use and Seasonal Interest This deciduous climber can cover a pergola or strong trellis with large heart-shaped leaves. Creamy-white flowers appear in summer, followed by edible greenish-brown fruit in autumn when pollinated. The RHS lists mature dimensions of 8–12 m tall and 4–8 m wide, although pruning and support determine the space it occupies. Its size makes it better suited to a large edible garden than a small wall or narrow bed. ## Siting and Soil Choose full sun, a sheltered position, and fertile, well-drained soil. Young growth is vulnerable to late frost and wind scorch. Plant a male cultivar with compatible flowering time nearby, or use a self-fertile kiwi as the pollen source. The familiar “fuzzy kiwi” fruit has a brown, hairy skin and green flesh. ## Maintenance When grown for fruit, prune in both summer and winter to manage the vigorous framework and keep fruiting wood productive.
