About Maidenhair Fern

Himalayan maidenhair fern is a low, spreading fern with fine, fan-shaped leaflets on dark wiry stems. Its delicate texture suits shaded groundcover, woodland edges, and the front of a moist border; fronds may stay through mild winters and often take on rusty tones in colder weather. [RHS species profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/449/adiantum-venustum/details) ## Garden Use and Appearance The creeping rhizomes gradually form a loose mat rather than a tight evergreen mound. Place it beneath shrubs or among rocks where its small, divided fronds can be seen close up. It is not a flowering plant; spores form on the fronds. ## Growing Conditions Give it partial to full shade and moderately fertile soil that stays evenly moist while draining freely. The RHS lists chalk, clay, loam, and sand as suitable soil types, provided moisture and drainage are balanced. The [Hardy Fern Foundation](https://hardyferns.org/ferns/adiantum-venustum/) reports that established plants can tolerate dry periods, but regular moisture supports better foliage, especially while the planting is becoming established. USDA zones 5–9 are reported by the Foundation; local exposure and winter conditions still matter. ## Maintenance Remove damaged or weathered fronds in spring if needed. The RHS reports no routine pruning requirement.
