About Bishop's Weed

Variegated bishop's weed is a deciduous perennial with green leaves edged in cream and small white flower clusters in early summer. It spreads by underground rhizomes, so plant it only where its growth can be contained. ## Garden Use and Appearance The low foliage forms a bright mat in a contained bed or large pot. The cultivar is less vigorous than green-leaved goutweed, but it can still spread beyond its planting area and compete with neighboring plants. The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/92914/aegopodium-podagraria-variegatum-v/details) lists a typical mature height of 0.1–0.5 m and spread of 1–1.5 m; [Morton Arboretum](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/bishops-weed/) notes its creeping habit, white flowers, and continuing potential to escape its intended space. ## Siting and Soil It grows in full sun or partial shade and tolerates a range of soil textures. Moist, well-drained soil helps prevent leaf scorch; dry conditions in full sun can stress the foliage. In regions where goutweed is invasive, choose a pot or a secure contained location and check local guidance before planting. ## Maintenance Check the bed edge for rhizomes and remove growth that crosses the boundary. Cutting flower stems before seed forms can reduce reseeding; dispose of removed rhizomes carefully because fragments may regrow.
