Pinwheel aeonium

Aeonium haworthii, or pinwheel aeonium, is an evergreen succulent subshrub with branching stems topped by compact rosettes of fleshy blue-green leaves. It works in a sunny, warm-climate border or rock garden and also grows well in containers where drainage and winter protection can be managed. ## Form and growing conditions The leaves may develop reddish margins near their tips in bright conditions. Small flower clusters appear in spring. The RHS gives a mature height and spread up to 0.5 m, while the San Diego Waterwise Garden Planner describes established plants reaching about 2–3 feet; the plant’s actual size varies with climate and growing conditions. Provide full sun to partial sun and sharply draining soil. In hotter inland sites, some afternoon protection can help prevent summer stress. ## Water and seasonal growth This species grows most actively in the cooler part of the year and slows during summer heat. Water deeply after the soil has dried, then allow it to drain; established plants can tolerate dry periods, though occasional irrigation supports steady growth. ## Maintenance Routine pruning is not required.
