Aeonium ‘Zwartkop’ is a branching succulent with glossy rosettes of deep burgundy-purple leaves that can appear nearly black in strong light. It adds a bold architectural accent to frost-free beds and containers, while its cone-shaped clusters of small yellow flowers provide a seasonal display when mature stems bloom. [NParks’ cultivar profile](https://www.nparks.gov.sg/florafaunaweb/flora/6/3/6335) records its dark rosettes and yellow flowers.
## Garden Use and Appearance
The rosettes sit at the ends of stems, so mature plants develop a small tree-like outline rather than a single ground-hugging rosette. NParks lists a maximum height and spread of 1–1.5 m; actual size depends on climate and whether it is grown in a pot or open ground. This cultivar is also known under the spelling ‘Schwarzkopf’. Horticultural references differ on its species placement.
## Growing Conditions
Provide bright light and sharply drained soil. NParks recommends thorough watering followed by allowing the soil to dry before watering again, and warns that prolonged hot weather can trigger dormancy or decline. Protect it from frost; it is better suited to containers or mild climates than to cold-winter gardens. The [RHS trial](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/trials-awards/plant-trial-results/aeonium) records ‘Zwartkop’ as an early-spring flowering cultivar.
## Maintenance
Remove dry outer leaves as they age. Protect container plants from freezing temperatures and reduce watering when growth slows in hot conditions.
