About Blue Fortune Hyssop

Agastache ‘Blue Fortune’ is a sterile hybrid giant hyssop with upright spikes of lavender-blue flowers and aromatic foliage. [University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension](https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/anise-hyssop-agastache-foeniculum/) identifies it as a cross of A. foeniculum and A. rugosa bred at Arboretum Trompenburg; its long summer bloom persists because the plant sets no seed. ## Form and landscape use Expect a clump about 2–3 feet tall and roughly 1–2 feet wide, with dense flower spikes over green leaves. Use it in sunny perennial borders, pollinator or cottage gardens, and cutting gardens; it also suits a large container. [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/agastache-blue-fortune/) lists USDA zones 5–9. [RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/109004/agastache-blue-fortune/details) reports UK hardiness H6; those UK ratings are not directly interchangeable with USDA zones. ## Site and soil Full sun gives the best flowering, though partial shade is tolerated. Plant in well-drained soil; NC State notes the hybrid tolerates dry soil and heat after establishment but may fail in heavy clay or persistently wet ground. Good drainage helps prevent crown or root rot. The foliage has a minty, licorice-like scent when brushed. ## Maintenance Remove faded flower spikes during the season to encourage further bloom and keep the clump tidy. Leave old stems through winter in colder areas for some protection, then cut back as new growth begins. Water new plants regularly; established plants need less frequent watering when soil drains well.
