Coronado® Red is the [Plant Select® hyssop ‘Pstessene’](https://plantselect.org/plant/agastache-pstessene/), a compact perennial with crimson and maroon flower spikes over aromatic blue-green foliage. It flowers from midsummer into fall and brings nectar for hummingbirds and other pollinators.
## Garden use
This selection from Welby Gardens works in sunny perennial borders, pollinator plantings and water-wise gardens. Plant Select’s [cultivar profile](https://plantselect.org/plant/agastache-pstessene/) gives a typical height of about 18 inches and spread of 12 inches or more; its [cultivar story](https://plantselect.org/plantstories/coronado-red-hyssop-red-and-radiant/) reports 16–18 inches tall and 12–16 inches wide. The [City of Fort Collins plant list](https://apps.fcgov.com/plant-list/?view=54-coronado-red-hyssop) gives about 1.5 feet tall and 1 foot or more wide; [Red Butte Garden](https://redbuttegarden.org/plants/species/2176/) reports a much larger 3-by-6-foot specimen. Allow extra room where the clump can spread, since garden listings vary.
## Growing conditions
Choose full sun or part shade in well-drained loam or sandy soil. Keep the root zone on the dry side once established; Plant Select cautions against overwatering and suggests a warm site for longevity. Plant Select lists zones 5–9; Red Butte Garden lists zones 5–10, so local winter and summer conditions may widen performance beyond the breeder’s range.
## Maintenance
Leave old stems through winter and cut them back in spring before new growth expands. Avoid excess irrigation and fertilizer, especially in heavy soil. This is a relatively short-lived perennial; replace plants if vigor declines after several years.
