About Agave 'Blue Glow'

Agave ‘Blue Glow’ is a slow-growing hybrid rosette with chalky blue-green leaves edged by fine yellow and red bands. The cultivar was developed from Agave attenuata × Agave ocahui and is valued for its symmetrical, solitary form and colorful margins, which brighten when backlit. ## Form and landscape use Unlike many agaves, ‘Blue Glow’ generally grows as one compact rosette rather than a spreading colony. Its measured size varies by source: horticultural references place it around 1–2 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide, while the RHS gives a maximum near 60 centimetres tall by 90 centimetres wide. That compact outline suits containers, rock gardens, and other well-drained settings where the leaf edges can be seen clearly. The rigid leaves have small marginal teeth and a pointed terminal spine, so position the plant where passersby will not brush against it. ## Growing conditions Provide full sun, with light afternoon shade in very hot climates, and sharply drained soil. It is drought tolerant after establishment; excess moisture can lead to root rot. ‘Blue Glow’ is a monocarpic agave that may take more than ten years to flower, after which the rosette dies. Unlike many agaves, this selection does not normally produce offsets, so seed-grown plants may not retain its distinctive traits. ## Maintenance No routine pruning is required; remove only damaged or spent leaves as needed. Handle carefully and wear gloves because the leaf tips are sharp and agave sap can irritate skin.
