About Agave mitis

Agave mitis is a Mexican succulent that forms broad, fleshy rosettes and can eventually make a clump. It is widely sold and discussed under the older name Agave celsii, which Kew treats as a synonym of A. mitis. The species' open rosette form and moderate size suit rock gardens and other spacious, sharply drained plantings. ## Form and Placement Ruth Bancroft Garden describes A. mitis rosettes to about 2 feet across that eventually form a large clump, and notes that they grow in full sun to part shade. Its specimen is hardy to the mid-20s °F in that garden's climate; this is an observed temperature report rather than a USDA zone conversion. Keep enough room for the clump to expand and place it where the rosette can be seen clearly. ## Growing Conditions Give it very free-draining, gritty soil and bright light. The RHS agave guide cautions that these succulents dislike permanently moist, overly fertile soil; in colder climates, a container can make drainage and winter conditions easier to manage. Kew's accepted name is A. mitis, while RHS still lists the horticultural synonym A. celsii. ## Maintenance Check the planting area periodically so the expanding clump has room. Allow the clump room to expand and take care around the pointed leaves when working nearby.
