About Thread-leaf Agave

Thread-leaf agave is a compact, evergreen succulent whose dense rosette of stiff green leaves is edged with curling white filaments and finished with sharp tips. It suits a sunny, sharply drained spot where its sculptural form can be seen without placing the leaf points beside a path. ## Form and landscape use Mature plants form a rounded rosette about 1–2 feet across; the [Chicago Botanic Garden](https://www.chicagobotanic.org/plant-information/plant-finder/agave-filifera-thread-leaved-agave) describes a compact ball of thorn-tipped leaves, while the [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/69880/agave-filifera/details) gives a broader 10–50 cm range. The threadlike leaf margins provide the plant’s defining detail. Use it as a small focal plant in a gravel or rock garden, or grow it in a container with fast-draining succulent mix. ## Siting and seasonal interest Give it full sun and a sheltered position with very free drainage; sand or a gritty cactus mix is suitable. The Chicago Botanic Garden lists dry soil, and the RHS recommends keeping this species almost dry in winter. Its evergreen rosette provides year-round structure. Mature plants can send up an erect flower spike to about 2.5 m, but flowering is unusual in cultivation and timing is not dependable. The RHS records that Agave leaves and terminal spines can irritate skin, so handle with gloves and keep the sharp tips away from close traffic. ## Maintenance No routine pruning is needed. Reduce watering in winter and protect from prolonged cold or wet where winters are severe. A container that can be sheltered from winter weather makes this plant easier to manage outside warm, dry climates.
