Palmer’s agave is a large, slow-growing succulent native to the mountains and grasslands of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. Its solitary rosette of upright, gray-green leaves makes a strong focal point in a dry garden, with a towering flowering display appearing only when the plant reaches maturity.
## Form and flowering
The rosette grows to about 4 feet tall and wide, with rigid leaves edged by reddish-brown teeth and tipped with a sharp spine. The mature plant sends up a branched flower stalk that can rise to about 20 feet; pale yellow-green flowers open in summer, after which the flowering rosette dies. Offsets are uncommon in the wild, so allow space for the plant’s full spread and eventual bloom stalk.
## Site and landscape use
The [University of Arizona Campus Arboretum](https://arboretum.arizona.edu/snyder-preserve-agave-palmeri) records this species on dry, rocky, open slopes and recommends full sun, while noting that it tolerates part shade and a range of soils. The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/687/agave-palmeri/details) likewise recommends full sun and well-drained loam or sand. Use it where its sharp leaves are set back from paths, play areas, and narrow entries.
## Maintenance
Choose a freely draining site and avoid overwatering. The RHS notes that routine pruning is unnecessary; remove a spent flowering stalk after the display has finished if needed for access or appearance.
