‘Splendida’ is a compact selection of the thorn-crested agave, valued for a small rosette of dark green leaves marked by a bright yellow-green stripe down the center. Its strong contrast and manageable size suit rock gardens, dry borders, and containers, where the spined leaf tips can be kept clear of foot traffic.
## Form and flowering
The [Missouri Botanical Garden](https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?%22=&taxonid=439254) describes this cultivar as reaching about 12 inches tall and 18 inches wide, substantially smaller than the species. Leaves are rigid and edged with sharp teeth. Mature rosettes may send up a tall, greenish-yellow flowering stalk, though the garden notes that flowering is rare. The selection also produces offsets and can form a cluster over time.
## Site and growing conditions
Plant in full sun and sandy or gritty soil that drains freely. The Missouri Botanical Garden lists USDA Zones 8–10 and dry to medium moisture. [A&J Garden Nursery](https://ajgardennursery.com.au/product/agave-univittata-splendida/) likewise describes the cultivar as slow-growing, suited to full sun or part shade, and best watered when the soil has dried.
## Maintenance
Avoid wet soil, especially in cool weather, and leave room for offsets. Because the leaf margins and terminal spines are sharp, site the plant away from paths and play areas. Remove dead leaves or offsets only as needed to maintain the desired outline.
