Utah Agave

*Agave utahensis*, the Utah agave, is a small evergreen succulent whose symmetrical rosette of blue-gray leaves ends in prominent marginal and terminal spines. It gives a compact architectural accent to dry rock gardens and sunny containers; allow room around it because the leaf tips are sharp. ## Form and seasonal interest Published cultivated sizes vary. The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/694/agave-utahensis/details) describes a clump-forming plant 0.1–0.5 m high and 0.5–1 m wide, while Utah’s [Conservation Garden Park](https://conservationgardenpark.jvwcd.gov/plants/1421/utah-agave) lists 6–12 in tall and wide. The garden notes that flowering is rare and occurs at the end of the plant’s life; its local profile records yellow-green flowers in late spring. ## Siting Plant in full sun and well-drained loam or sand, or use a freely draining cactus mix in a container. Water to establish, then keep irrigation very low; the Conservation Garden Park profile says it needs very little water once established. Avoid wet winter soil. The RHS notes that the plant is native to the southwestern United States and recommends bright, sheltered conditions for container culture. ## Maintenance Little routine care is needed. Remove only dead or damaged leaves, and use gloves when working around the spines. Keep the crown above standing water and protect container-grown plants from prolonged winter wet.
