About Mahogany Bugleweed

Ajuga reptans ‘Mahogany’ is a low, spreading bugleweed grown for glossy burgundy-to-bronze foliage and short spikes of blue-lilac flowers. It makes a useful groundcover for shaded borders, paths, and spaces under shrubs, with spring color from both leaves and flowers ([RHS cultivar profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/326545/ajuga-reptans-mahogany/details); [Thompson & Morgan](https://www.thompson-morgan.com/p/ajuga-reptans-mahogany/WKC9072TM)). ## Garden use and season Plant it where a dense mat can fill open ground, or use it to edge a path or soften a container. The Royal Horticultural Society describes the cultivar as semi-evergreen and notes that it can spread quickly; Thompson & Morgan lists flowers from April to June. Published mature size figures conflict. Darwin gives 4–6 inches tall by 10–12 inches wide; Thompson & Morgan gives up to 15 cm (about 6 inches) tall and a highly variable 0.5–4.5 foot spread; the RHS lists broad size classes of 0.1–0.5 m (about 4–20 inches) tall and 1–1.5 m (3.3–4.9 feet) wide. These are differing source ranges, not one expected mature size, so allow room for runners and check the planting space over time ([Darwin](https://www.darwinperennials.com/Products/Details/?phid=002101249003093); [RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/326545/ajuga-reptans-mahogany/details); [Thompson & Morgan](https://www.thompson-morgan.com/p/ajuga-reptans-mahogany/WKC9072TM)). ## Growing conditions Provide moist, well-drained soil and partial shade to shade. The RHS notes that foliage may scorch in full sun, while commercial listings describe broader light tolerance when moisture is adequate. In hot or humid climates, good airflow helps reduce crown-rot risk in Ajuga. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and prolonged dry periods. Remove runners that move beyond the intended bed, and divide crowded patches only if they lose vigor or exceed their space. Routine pruning is generally unnecessary.
