About Silver Queen Bugleweed

‘Silver Queen’ is a spreading bugleweed with low rosettes of gray-green leaves marked in cream and short blue-purple flower spikes in spring. Its evergreen carpet brightens shaded edges, paths, rock gardens, and other small spaces; leave room for its runners and keep it away from lawns or beds where it could be difficult to contain. ## Foliage and flowers The cultivar’s pale variegation makes a light groundcover accent through the year, while late-spring flowers add a contrasting vertical note. [Ball Seed’s plant profile](https://info.ballseed.com/WEBTRACKPLANTINFO.ASPX?PHID=002101249005085&env=P) describes blue flower spikes over green-and-white leaves and reports a spreading habit. [Cistus Nursery](https://cistus.com/products/retail-ajuga-reptans-silver-queen) likewise describes a low mat, late-spring flowers, and full sun to partial shade. Plants are generally under 6 inches tall; reported spreads vary from about 10 inches to 2 feet or more with site and age. ## Siting For species-level care, [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/ajuga-reptans/) recommends moist, well-drained soil and dividing crowded plants. Grow in that kind of soil. The foliage can handle full sun where roots stay moist, but partial shade helps protect the pale leaves in hot locations. Use it as a small-scale groundcover, edging, or in a rock garden; it can also be divided for additional planting. ## Maintenance Water through establishment and during prolonged dry weather. Trim or lift stray runners if they move beyond the planting area. Remove faded flower spikes for a tidy appearance, and divide congested mats when they outgrow their allotted space.
