Chocolate Chip Ajuga Plant

Ajuga ‘Chocolate Chip’ is a compact, evergreen bugleweed grown for its close mat of small chocolate-brown leaves and short blue flower spikes. It suits small groundcover plantings, edging, stepping-stone gaps, and containers where its finer texture is useful. ## Appearance and placement The cultivar is also known as ‘Valfredda’. Terra Nova describes a low, spreading plant with dark foliage and spring flowers; its published dimensions are about 6 inches tall by 16 inches wide. Use it at the front of a bed or among stones, allowing room for runners. The RHS notes that it can spread quickly and may become a nuisance in some settings, so avoid placing it where runners can enter lawns or finely managed perennial beds. ## Growing conditions It grows in sun or part shade; in hotter or drier sites, part shade and consistent moisture help protect the foliage. Choose humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Species-level guidance from NC State Extension notes that Ajuga tolerates a range of light, but wet heavy soil can encourage crown rot and dense mats may need division when crowded. Check local guidance before using it where Ajuga is considered invasive. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and dry spells, then monitor the edges and lift or divide crowded sections as needed.
