Buri Palm

Buri palm (*Allagoptera caudescens*) is a Brazilian palm with a solitary crown of long, pinnate leaves and distinctive pale leaf undersides. It usually develops a visible aerial trunk, although botanist Larry Noblick records stemless populations in nutrient-poor sandy sites. ## Landscape Use and Form A palm for warm climates, Buri can serve as a specimen or as part of tropical landscape planting. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden reports that it grows slowly, reaches up to about 10 m in South Florida, and grows best there in full sun with plentiful moisture while tolerating shade. A northeastern Brazil palm guide describes the usual aerial stem as 4–8 m tall; total landscape height varies with site and growth form. The species is native to eastern Brazil’s Atlantic coastal forests. ## Siting Give this solitary palm room for its eventual trunk and spreading crown. Fairchild’s cultivated South Florida guidance favors moisture, while the Brazilian habitat records include tropical wet forest; do not treat it as a dry-site palm. ## Maintenance Allow the trunk and crown to develop without crowding. Use local climate and drainage to decide whether supplemental moisture is needed, and leave sufficient clearance for mature fronds.
