About Medusa Ornamental Onion

‘Medusa’ ornamental onion forms a low mound of narrow grey-green leaves that twist near their tips. Its initially nodding buds straighten into rounded, light-amethyst-purple flower clusters. The Walters Gardens introduction sheet and North Creek Nurseries’ cultivar listing give a mature height of 20–24 inches, spread of about 24 inches, and USDA zones 4–8 ([Walters Gardens](https://www.waltersgardens.com/cms/uploads/cms_ArticlePDF_203_1.pdf), [North Creek Nurseries](https://northcreeknurseries.com/plant-name/Allium-Medusa-)). ## Landscape Use Plant it in a sunny to partly shaded border, rock garden, herb garden, or container. North Creek lists summer through fall flowers, bee and butterfly visitors, and cut-flower use. The foliage has an onion scent when bruised, and deer and rabbits tend to avoid the cultivar ([North Creek Nurseries](https://northcreeknurseries.com/plant-name/Allium-Medusa-)). ## Growing Conditions Provide sun or part sun and well-drained soil. North Creek describes drought tolerance. The Walters and North Creek records list USDA zones 4–8. North Creek identifies patent PP28701 and Walters Gardens as the breeder. ## Maintenance Divide established clumps when propagation is desired. Remove spent flower stalks for a tidy finish, or leave them to develop seed heads.
