Alocasia ‘Black Velvet’ is a slow-growing, compact tropical foliage plant with thick, velvety leaves in very dark green to near-black, marked by bright silver veins. Its evergreen, rhizomatous habit and small mature size suit a warm indoor collection, conservatory, or sheltered container display.
## Form and placement
The [Royal Horticultural Society](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/136801/alocasia-black-velvet/details) lists a mature height and spread of 0.1–0.5 m; North Carolina Extension describes Black Velvet as reaching about 1.5 ft tall. The leaves are the main ornamental feature. Use it as a close-view specimen in a pot rather than expecting a cold-hardy landscape perennial.
## Growing conditions
Give it partial shade or bright indirect light. A peat-free houseplant mix with added grit should remain moist but drain freely; avoid leaving the rhizome in waterlogged mix. The RHS recommends warm conditions above 15°C and reduced watering in winter. In warm climates, [Singapore NParks](https://www.nparks.gov.sg/florafaunaweb/flora/6/7/6702) also advises protection from harsh direct sun and a freely draining potting medium. Like other aroids, plant tissue can irritate skin and is toxic if eaten; keep it away from pets and children.
## Maintenance
Remove yellowing leaves at the base with clean shears. Water during active growth, let excess drain, and reduce watering during the cooler, slower-growing season. Watch indoor plants for spider mites and mealybugs.
