Create design onlineAbout Red Hot Poker Aloe
Aloe aculeata is a solitary, stemless aloe with a dense rosette of gray-green leaves marked by reddish-brown teeth and prickles. Its upright flower stalks carry tubular blooms that open from bright red buds into orange and greenish-yellow tones, giving the species a distinctive architectural presence.
## Form and seasonal interest
Kew’s Flora Zambesiaca description records leaves 30–60 cm long, a densely flowered upright inflorescence, and the changing flower colors. Kew lists the species’ native range from southern Zimbabwe to Limpopo and places it in dry shrubland and desert biomes. The opened RHS profile confirms the accepted species name and the common name red-hot poker aloe.
## Siting
Provide bright light, ventilation, and a freely draining growing medium. The [RHS Aloe guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/aloe?type=0) recommends full light and grit or sharp sand to improve drainage, and cautions against shade, continuously wet compost, and freezing temperatures. Aloes can be grown in containers; use a pot with drainage holes and a cactus or other free-draining mix.
## Maintenance
Water moderately while actively growing and much more sparingly during cool or dormant periods, allowing excess water to drain away. Remove damaged outer leaves only as needed, taking care around the sharp leaf margins.
