About Cat's Tail Aloe

Aloe castanea is an evergreen succulent with a branching, tree-like form and rosettes of thick, gray-green leaves edged with teeth. Mature plants produce long flower stalks carrying densely packed brown flowers, giving this species a distinctive architectural presence in a sunny, well-drained garden or a large container. ## Form and use The [Royal Horticultural Society profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/934/aloe-castanea/details) lists a cultivated height and spread of about 1–1.5 m and describes the flower stalk as reaching 1 m. It includes the species in architectural, coastal, Mediterranean-climate, patio/container, subtropical, and conservatory garden settings. Kew accepts Aloe castanea Schönland and identifies it as a succulent shrub or tree native from Gauteng to Eswatini. ## Siting Provide full sun and freely draining soil. The RHS recommends loam and well-drained conditions, and its Aloe guide advises adding grit or sharp sand to container compost while avoiding shade, continuously wet compost, and freezing temperatures. ## Maintenance Aloes need no routine pruning according to the RHS profile. Water moderately during active growth and very sparingly while dormant in winter. Remove dead leaves or spent flower stalks when needed, and monitor for scale insects and mealybugs.
