About Slender Aloe

Aloiampelos tenuior is a South African succulent with slender, rambling stems and loose rosettes of gray-green leaves. Its yellow to orange-red flowers appear over a long season, and the stems can mingle with nearby shrubs as they lengthen. ## Form and flowering Kew and RHS accept Aloiampelos tenuior and list Aloe tenuior as a synonym. The Plant Library profile under that former name describes a 1–1.5 m cultivated size, while Singapore’s National Parks Board lists mature height up to 3 m and spread up to 1.8 m. The Board describes pale-yellow to orange-red flowers pollinated by bees and other insects; the Plant Library reports red or yellow forms and flowering from May to September in South Africa. ## Siting The opened profiles describe full sun or semishade, low water needs, and dry thicket or rockery settings. This drought-tolerant species needs well-drained conditions; give its loose stems room to mingle, or prune them periodically where they could scramble over neighboring plants. ## Maintenance Water sparingly in well-drained soil and trim long stems when they need to be kept within bounds. The National Parks Board notes that stem cuttings are an easy propagation method.
