Create design onlineAbout Amazel Basil® Sweet Italian Basil
Amazel Basil® is a vigorous Italian sweet basil selected for aromatic leaves and continued growth after flowering begins. Proven Winners describes it as sterile and strongly resistant to downy mildew, with an upright habit and mature dimensions of 20–36 inches tall by 12–24 inches wide. [Proven Winners](https://www.provenwinners.com/plants/ocimum/amazel-basil-sweet-italian-basil-ocimum-basilicum) lists the plant as Ocimum basilicum ‘UF16-23-2’ and cites U.S. plant patent 30,917.
## Garden use
Use Amazel in a sunny herb bed or a large container where its leafy growth can be harvested often. Its green foliage and upright form work well among vegetables, annuals and other culinary herbs. The breeder lists USDA zones 10a–11b and classifies it as an annual; in cooler climates, grow it through the frost-free season.
## Growing
Provide full sun, average soil and steady moisture with good drainage. Space plants to allow airflow and make harvesting easy. This selection is sold as a vegetatively produced plant, so the usual seed-based days-to-maturity estimate does not apply. The breeder reports that Amazel continues producing leaves and shoots after flower initiation.
## Maintenance
Pinch or harvest shoot tips regularly to encourage fresh branching and tender growth. Flowers may appear late or sporadically; remove them if desired, although the plant remains productive after flowering starts. Keep harvesting through the warm season and avoid waterlogged soil. Patent identification is supported by [U.S. patent USPP30917P2](https://patents.google.com/patent/USPP30917P2/en).
