Create design onlineAbout Obelisk Standing Ovation™ Serviceberry Tree
Standing Ovation™ is the First Editions® selection *Amelanchier alnifolia* ‘Obelisk’, a narrow, upright Saskatoon serviceberry suited to tighter planting spaces. It bears white spring flowers, edible purple-blue fruit when pollinated and set, green foliage, and orange-red autumn color.
## Landscape use and seasonal interest
The breeder describes it as a hedging candidate and gives a mature height of about 15 feet with a 7-foot spread. The University of Minnesota lists a narrower 4-foot spread, so allow room for a modestly broader canopy than the tightest estimate. Its vertical habit can suit a narrow border or screen, while spring flowers and fall color provide seasonal display. Birds may eat the small fruit before it is harvested.
## Siting and growing
This western North American native grows in full sun or part shade; fruiting is generally best with ample sun and well-drained soil. The species tolerates a range of conditions but should not be planted in persistently wet ground. The First Editions® product page identifies the selection as ‘Obelisk’; it does not establish a patent number or current patent status, so none is asserted here.
## Maintenance
Water through establishment and during prolonged dry periods. For a hedge, prune selectively to maintain clearance and form; avoid excessive shearing if flowers and fruit are desired. Remove damaged or crossing branches and monitor suckers at the base.
