Northline Saskatoon Serviceberry

‘Northline’ is a fruit-selected cultivar of Saskatoon serviceberry (*Amelanchier alnifolia*). It forms an upright oval shrub that broadens with age, produces white spring flowers and a useful crop of flavorful purple berries, and can send up numerous suckers. ## Landscape use and seasonal interest Use it in an edible landscape, fruiting hedge, or wildlife planting where there is room to manage its suckering habit. Oregon State reports a typical mature height of 6–10 feet; Utah State lists approximately 10 feet tall by 6 feet wide and describes it as a heavy producer with medium berries that ripen early to mid-season. These estimates differ from the catalog’s stored dimensions, so use the cultivar’s actual space and growing conditions when siting. ## Siting and growing Provide full sun for best fruit production and well-drained soil. Saskatoon serviceberries adapt to a range of soil types, but wet, poorly drained ground can cause root problems. Maintain moisture during establishment and drought; established shrubs may survive with less irrigation, although fruit yield can decline. ## Maintenance Check the base periodically and remove unwanted suckers if a defined shrub or hedge is desired; retain them where a wider thicket is useful. Prune selectively before growth begins to remove damaged or crowded wood and maintain an open canopy.
