About Regent Serviceberry Shrub

‘Regent’ is a compact fruiting cultivar of Saskatoon serviceberry (*Amelanchier alnifolia*), selected for a smaller shrub form and sweet edible berries. White flowers appear in spring, followed by summer fruit and yellow-to-red autumn foliage. ## Landscape use and seasonal interest Use this cultivar in a smaller edible landscape, mixed border, or informal hedge where a compact, rounded shrub is appropriate. University references place it near 6 feet tall; reported spread ranges from 6 to 8 feet. Its compact habit and relatively light suckering distinguish it from more expansive Saskatoon selections. Birds may compete for ripe fruit. ## Siting and growing Full sun to part shade is suitable, with sun favoring flowering and fruit. Choose well-drained soil; serviceberries tolerate several soil types but do poorly in persistently wet ground. Water while the shrub establishes and during extended dry periods, especially if a good berry crop is a goal. A. alnifolia is hardy in cold climates, though local performance depends on provenance and conditions. ## Maintenance Allow room for the mature width. Remove damaged or crowded stems as needed and trim basal shoots only if a tighter outline is wanted. Harvest berries as they ripen, before birds take them. The cultivar is listed by Oregon State, Minnesota, and Utah extension sources; these sources do not establish a patent number or current patent status.
