Serviceberry Trees

Amelanchier is a diverse genus of deciduous shrubs and small trees, commonly called serviceberries, juneberries, or shadbushes. Across the genus, white spring flowers are followed by small edible, dark berries, while many species add yellow, orange, or red fall foliage. ## Landscape use and seasonal interest Use a correctly identified species or cultivar as a specimen, in a mixed border, or in a naturalized planting; mature size and suckering behavior vary widely. The genus includes compact shrubs as well as small trees, so select by the individual species rather than treating the catalog’s representative dimensions as universal. Birds also feed on the fruit. ## Siting and growing Most garden forms grow in full sun or partial shade and perform best in moist, well-drained soil. Sun generally favors flowering and fruiting; avoid persistently waterlogged ground. Flowering occurs in spring, fruit follows in summer, and autumn foliage may extend the display. Species differ in hardiness, mature form, and tolerance of dry or wet sites. ## Maintenance Water newly planted shrubs while they establish, then adjust irrigation to the species and local rainfall. Remove damaged or crossing stems as needed. Some species spread by suckers; thin those shoots only where a narrower clump is desired.
