About Butterscotch™ Bluestar

Butterscotch™ bluestar has blue, star-shaped spring flowers, fine green foliage, and a golden-butterscotch fall display. Emerald Coast Growers sells it as Amsonia ×Butterscotch, while botanical gardens also list a Butterscotch selection under A. hubrichtii. ## Landscape Use Use it as a flowering perennial in a sunny or partly shaded border, where its upright stems and seasonal foliage can mingle with grasses and other long-lived perennials. The grower profile gives a mature height of about 36 inches and USDA zones 4–9. Its May–June steel-blue bloom and fall color extend interest beyond the flowering period ([Emerald Coast Growers product sheet](https://ecgrowers.com/content/ecg_product_amsonia_xbutterscotch_4.8.21_rev1.pdf)). ## Seasonal Interest New growth and blue flowers brighten late spring; the narrow foliage remains green through summer before turning rich gold to butterscotch in autumn. Red stems add contrast, especially as the plant emerges. ## Siting Provide full sun to part shade and well-drained garden soil. The breeder’s grower sheet describes improved form and resistance to tip die-back compared with other Amsonia ([GrowerTalks, by Emerald Coast Growers’ head grower](https://www.growertalks.com/Article/?articleid=23814)). Missouri Botanical Garden and the JC Raulston Arboretum list a Butterscotch selection with A. hubrichtii, while Emerald Coast Growers uses the hybrid notation A. ×Butterscotch; the catalog identity is therefore retained at the cultivar level ([Missouri Botanical Garden](https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?taxonid=276498), [JC Raulston Arboretum](https://jcra.ncsu.edu/horticulture/our-plants/results-by-name-serial-number.php?serial=132470)). ## Maintenance Water during establishment and extended dry spells. Once established, remove damaged or untidy stems after flowering if needed; avoid routine division unless the clump outgrows its space.
