About Dainty Swan Anemone

Dainty Swan is a compact, clump-forming anemone with semi-double white flowers marked pink to purple-pink on their backs and carried on dark stems. The cultivar is Macane005, bred by Elizabeth and Alasdair MacGregor and sold as part of the Swan series; its flowers open above a neat mound from midsummer into fall. ## Flowers and landscape use The nodding buds show the colored reverse before the flowers face outward, so the bicolor effect changes as stems move and blossoms open. RHS describes a mature plant around 45–50 cm tall, while nursery profiles commonly place it near 18–24 inches high and wide. It fits a sunny or partly shaded border, cottage planting, or a small-space arrangement, and the flowers can be cut for indoor use. The US plant patent identifies the protected cultivar by its denomination Macane005; it issued June 26, 2018. ## Growing conditions Grow in fertile, humus-rich soil that stays moist but drains freely. Full sun or partial shade is suitable; provide reliable moisture in sunny or hot sites. The cultivar is a deciduous herbaceous perennial. Its compact, clumping habit is more restrained than many Japanese anemones, though dimensions and flowering dates vary with climate. The [RHS plant profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/380711/anemone-dainty-swan-macane005/details) confirms the synonym, flower coloring, habit, and culture. [Monrovia’s cultivar profile](https://www.monrovia.com/dainty-swan-anemone-49304.html) records the Macane005 denomination, PP 29,426, 18–24-inch size, and midsummer-to-fall bloom. Patent facts are from the [US patent record](https://patents.google.com/patent/USPP29426P3/en). ## Maintenance Keep new plantings evenly moist while they establish, then water during extended dry spells. Add organic mulch in spring to hold moisture and protect roots; in colder areas, a late-autumn mulch can reduce winter heaving. Cut old flower stems back after flowering and remove the previous season’s foliage before fresh growth emerges.
