Queen Charlotte Anemone

Queen Charlotte is a large, clump-forming Japanese anemone with divided green leaves and rose-pink semi-double flowers centered by yellow stamens. Its tall, wiry stems bring color to the late-summer and fall border, when many spring perennials have finished. ## Flowers and placement The [Royal Horticultural Society](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/26677/anemone-%C3%97-hybrida-queen-charlotte/details) describes the cultivar as about 1.2 m tall, with flowers bearing as many as 20 overlapping petals; [Ashwood Nurseries](https://www.ashwoodnurseries.com/product/anemone-xhybrida-queen-charlotte/) reports plants reaching about 1.5 m after ten years. Use it toward the middle or back of a border, in a cottage garden, or where the graceful stems can rise above lower planting. It is also listed as bee friendly and attractive to butterflies. ## Growing conditions Give it full sun or partial shade and moist but well-drained soil. It tolerates a range of garden soil textures, but avoid excessive winter wet. Let the clump settle in place: established plants may spread rapidly by rhizomes and can become intrusive near smaller neighbors. The RHS also lists the cultivar as deciduous and identifies ‘Königin Charlotte’ as a synonym of ‘Queen Charlotte’. ## Maintenance Water during dry periods, especially while the plant is establishing. In late autumn, cut back flowering stems after the display or leave them until the bed is cleaned. Divide in early spring or autumn only when a clump needs rejuvenation or restraint, and monitor new shoots where spread would be unwanted.
