About Snowdrop Anemone

Snowdrop anemone (*Anemone sylvestris*) is a spring-flowering perennial with deeply divided green leaves and nodding white flowers centered by golden stamens. Its early display and spreading habit suit informal borders and naturalistic plantings, provided it has room to form a patch. ## Form and flowering The [Royal Horticultural Society](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/1261/anemone-sylvestris/details) describes flowers up to 8 cm across in late spring and early summer, while [Illinois Extension](https://extension.illinois.edu/flowers/snowdrop-anemone) gives May through June bloom and a typical height of 12–18 inches. The RHS lists a broader potential height range of 0.5–1 m, reflecting differing garden conditions and descriptions; the existing catalog dimensions are retained as a typical landscape size. White flowers rise above long-stalked, divided leaves. This is *Anemone sylvestris*, not a true snowdrop (*Galanthus*). ## Growing conditions Grow in full sun to partial shade in humus-rich, well-drained soil. Keep the root zone from becoming excessively dry during active growth, while avoiding persistently waterlogged ground. The species is hardy in USDA zones 4–8 according to Illinois Extension. Root suckers can extend beyond the original clump, especially in loose soil, so place it where natural spread is useful rather than beside delicate neighbors. ## Maintenance Allow foliage to die back after flowering, then cut it back if it becomes untidy. The RHS notes division in early spring as a propagation method; divide only when increasing stock or moving a clump. Handle with gloves if sensitive: the RHS warns that ingestion may cause mild stomach upset and contact may irritate skin.
